SLJ DAY 2: The Air Up There Activity 1: Bee Informed

1. The word ‘bumblebee’ is a compound word (bumble + bee). The word ‘bumble’ means to hum or buz

2. Bumblebees can fly very quickly. They can reach ground speeds of 54 kilometers per hour (km/h)

3.Bumblebees can do more work and carry more pollen than other bees, including honeybees. In fact, they can do  50 times as much work as a normal honeybee.

4.The number of bumblebees is declining in New Zealand due to a number of factors, including removal of wild flowers and flowering the trees from the landscape [insert any two causes of the declining number of bumblebees].

    Well done for completing this Summer Learning Journey activity, 'Bee Informed' and for filling out all of the blanks! How did you find this activity? I think that it's incredibly sad that the bumblebee population is depleting— why do you think that there is a removal of wild flowers? There are plenty of flowers that attract bees and help them, can you tell us what any of these flowers are?
